Use recycled carbon fiber to make dentures

In the medical field, recycled carbon fiber has found many uses, such as making dentures. In this regard, the Swiss Innovative Recycling company has accumulated some experience. The company collects carbon fiber waste from other companies and uses it to industrially produce multi-purpose, non-woven recycled carbon fiber.

Due to its inherent characteristics, composite materials are widely used in many applications that have high requirements for lightweight, robustness and mechanical properties. In addition to the most widely used automotive or aviation fields, in recent years, carbon fiber reinforced composite materials have gradually been used in the production of medical prostheses, and they are one of the most commonly used materials for the manufacture of prostheses, dentures and bones.

Compared with traditional materials, dentures made of carbon fiber are not only lighter, but also can effectively absorb vibration, and the production time is short. In addition, for this special application, because this composite material uses chopped recycled carbon fiber, it is more conducive to processing and forming.

The Swiss Innovative Recycling company has accumulated some experience in the use of recycled carbon fiber for dentures. The company is committed to collecting carbon fiber waste from other companies and then industrially producing carbon fiber products. Since 2016, Innovative Recycling has been producing non-woven recycled carbon fiber and supplying it to many application industries, such as medical, automotive, construction, energy, sports, and shipbuilding.

“The production of multi-purpose, non-woven recycled carbon fiber was not the first thing we proposed. It dates back about 10 years. At that time, companies that used virgin carbon fiber for production would generate dry carbon fiber waste in the production process. By using these waste materials, non-woven carbon fibers can be made. This product has good market potential, but lacks the amount of waste materials, capital and machinery and equipment required for mass production.” Innovative Recycling CEO Enrico Rocchinotti recalled, “In 2015, my business partner Luca Mattace Raso decided to invest in the industrial production of this carbon fiber. Innovative Recycling started production in the second year.”

After it was put into production, Innovative Recycling realized the commercialization of this recycled carbon fiber, but at the same time realized that if this recycled carbon fiber is a semi-finished product, there will be no market, so it must go further and provide the market with finished products. Later, the company found an Italian company engaged in the dental business, and they were in a leading position in making dentures with carbon fiber. At that time, the Italian company was looking for a material and wanted to make it into 81 discs, which were then milled to make a highly innovative denture. To this end, Innovative Recycling used a specially developed bio-resin to infiltrate the carbon fiber felt produced by it, and solidified it into a 2cm thick and 1m2 sheet, which was exactly what the Italian customer wanted.

In order to make the board have high mechanical properties, Innovative Recycling can not use the traditional prepreg production mode. In fact, this kind of non-woven recycled carbon fiber prepreg will be torn once it is unfolded and pressed on the production line.

Therefore, the company turned to Cannon for help and developed an alternative production plan together. They first cut the non-woven carbon fiber into 1m2 sheets, and then in a special workstation, they used liquid leaching (LLD) bio-resin (this resin was specially developed using the Jaime Ferrerof R* concept) to infiltrate the carbon fibers The sheet material is immersed and stacked 70 carbon fiber sheets to form a felt material, and then heat-molded into a shape using a 750t press. The plate made by this process, after being reprocessed, becomes the disc needed for making dentures.

Why is recycled carbon fiber suitable for dentures? Mr. Rocchinotti responded by saying: “Carbon fiber is a very light and flexible material. Its weight is only 1/8 of the raw materials used in the market for dentures such as zirconia, ceramics and titanium. Its characteristics will give people a kind of possession. The feeling of your own teeth. Therefore, for this particular application, recycled carbon fiber is an excellent material because it has better biocompatibility, greater fatigue strength and maximum flexibility. ”
