Covestro AG (Germany) reported that it is collaborating with a Chinese shoe designer to use its composite material solutions to further develop innovative footwear concepts, especially high-performance basketball shoes and foot-based running shoes. The upper is made of the company’s Desmopan thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fiber, and the midsole is printed with thermoplastic polyurethane powder (TPU) powder through selective laser sintering (SLS). Covestro stated that its TPU powder has high tear resistance and abrasion resistance, making it an ideal choice for running shoes because of its flexibility and high energy return. As an added benefit, most of the remaining powder in the process can be recycled.
The shoe also uses the Maezio carbon fiber reinforced TPU (CFRTP) shoe body developed by the company, which is said to be light in weight, but very hard and torsion resistant, providing a high degree of design freedom and strong visual appeal. The running shoe concept uses waterproof INSQIN coating.
